Hannya (般若) mask, which is a significant and iconic element in Noh theater and Japanese folklore. Hannya masks are often used to depict jealous or vengeful female spirits, embodying a mix of sorrow, rage, and supernatural power.
Features of This Mask:
Sharp, protruding horns – A signature feature of Hannya masks, symbolizing intense emotion and demonic transformation.
Metallic finish with patina (copper/bronze appearance) – Gives the mask an aged, almost mystical quality, suggesting it may be a decorative or ceremonial piece rather than a stage prop.
Exaggerated, twisted expression – The eyes and mouth convey both anger and pain, reflecting the dual nature of the Hannya spirit (both vengeful and sorrowful).
Rope ties on the sides – Suggests this mask is meant to be worn or displayed traditionally.
Please note, each mask is handmade and your mask may have a slightly different pattern than the mask presented on the store.
